In architecture and design, materials are the initial element
that creates the tangible object that delivers interpretations for
the receiver. A general fallacy is linked to the materials as a
secondary design element. This fallacy could be argued against
if the design approved the relationship between material and
identity through materializing identity as tangibles. Moreover, to
support materials as a primary element of identity and cultural
significance.
This research concentrates on literature and interior
discourses that discuss the materials and the relationship
between identity and cultural significance with the building’s
materials significantly while alteration process such
as adaptation and reconstruction will demonstrate the
effectiveness of new material on altering the identity of the
building. The research investigates the modality of new
materials promote the balance between past and future for the
new generations. But without affecting the building’s identity.
Furthermore, it explores a process to combine the founded and
intended without contradictions within the building’s context to
conserve its’ identity.
Therefore, this research aimed to propose a method that
will be used while alteration and adding new materials that
conserve the building’s identity and could be easily read for the
new generation. Moreover, it studies the context of founded
and intended to avoid the contradiction to construct a method
that will combine the founded and intended in a harmonic and a
consistent theme that will date the building’s timeline
The research design based on the context analysis of the
Doughty’s Oil Mill in Lincoln city as a case study. The research
observes the building’s cultural identity and interprets its’
existing materials in a contextual observation. The design
concept tackled the contradiction between founded and
intended. It constructs contrasting the new materials with
the original materials to create a material collage’s timeline.
Furthermore, the contrast of the adaptation as Art studio
achieves the design concept of contrasting, but it conserves
the building’s identity as an industrial building. The used
methodology of contrasting material is regarding type, shape,
colour and conditions. The special response and the design
development represent the design concept result as contrasting
the founded and the intended during the production of the
culture process.
Holistically, the research directs the attention to the
importance of materials on forming the building’s cultural
identity.it puts the needs for a design that conserve the
identity while using new materials in alteration and provide
a process that designers, architects and archaeologists
could use to prevent new materials’ effectiveness on the
identity. Consequently, further recommendations could be
recommended to compare contrasting and similarity to prevent
prejudice for a specific method.
