Masters Abstract

Salem, Mahmoud Jamil Husain. Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenological Body and Intersection with Modern art Painting. Thesis for Master Degree, Yarmouk University, 2019. (Supervisor: Prof. Dr Khaled Alhamzah).

This study aimed to show Merleau-Ponty’s perceptions of the human body in general, and the Phenomenological body in particular. In addition, to finding its intersection points with the modern art.The researcher used the analytical descriptive approach, in which he is answering the hypotheses through the analysis of the selected samples. The selected samples were taken from the works of: Salvador Dali, Egone Schiele, Edvard Munch, and Frida Kahlo.

The results showed that Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy and the works of modernists are closely linked, since each of them used the body to express the existential state, and to search for the meaning of the body beyond its apparent existence, which in turn intersects with the Phenomenology of the body of Merleau-Ponty.

Based on the results of the study, the researcher made a number of recommendations, the most important of which was to conduct further research on the body in art, and to study other philosophies that might intersect with art.

Keywords: Merleau-Ponty, Human body, Phenomenology, The Visible and Invisible, painting.
