On Saturday, April 19, 2025, the Faculty of Art and Design at Applied Science Private University organized a scientific visit to the ancient city of Umm al-Jimal in the Mafraq Governorate. Umm al-Jimal is considered one of Jordan’s most prominent historical sites, known for witnessing the succession of various civilizations, including the Byzantine and Islamic eras.
Dr. Nasser Al-Maghrabi accompanied the students on this trip, leading a group of Master’s students in Interior Design on a field tour aimed at exploring the architectural and urban character of Umm al-Jimal. The visit aligns with the college’s efforts to promote educational and cultural activities beyond the confines of the classroom.
The trip aimed to broaden students’ academic horizons and bridge theoretical knowledge with architectural reality by analyzing the technological methods used in the construction of the ancient city and comparing them with contemporary architectural technologies. This comparative approach was intended to inspire new ideas for the development of interior and exterior designs in modern buildings.
The visit commenced at the Visitor Center, where tour guide Samar Al-Harman delivered a brief overview of the city’s history, its main sections, and the prevalent architectural styles. The tour then continued through the archaeological site under the guidance of tour guide Mana’ Al-Masaeed, who provided an in-depth presentation on the site's most prominent residential, religious, and urban landmarks.
The trip concluded with an interactive discussion session between the students and several tour guides, during which they discussed the key insights gained from the field experience. This session contributed to enhancing the students’ applied understanding and academic knowledge.
This visit forms part of the Faculty’s vision to integrate academic and practical learning, encouraging students to engage directly with architectural and cultural heritage, thus enriching their educational experience and contributing to the development of their design skills.
