In an age obsessed with the development of healthcare services and long-range communications, the increasing use of information technology has increasingly shed light on issues of patient privacy and health information security. Most importantly, the new adoption of electronic medical records and network technology in UK NHS hospitals has increased the need to protect the electronic health networks through which this information is stored and transmitted electronically. The objectives of this thesis are mainly focused on:

  1. Reviewing the growth of information technology in healthcare sector.

  2. An investigation into the development and implementation of methods for protecting patient privacy and security of electronic health information in an era of information technology within NHS hospitals in the UK. Furthermore, this thesis is designed to examine such relevant issues in patient privacy and health information security within health care systems (e.g. Electronic Medical Records).
