Abstract

Syntactic Styles in light of the Residual Theory: A Study of Ibn Al-Anbari’s “Al-Inssaf fi Masail Al-Khilaf

This thesis aimed at providing a theoretical framework for the Residual theory in Arabic syntax in light of modern linguistic theories, particularly, the   residual theory proposed by Loserkelin his book The violence of Language.

The descriptive analytical approach wa followed to outline and classify the ‘residuals’ of the Arabic syntactic structures. The adopted scientific methodology tried to combine the   developmental perspective of Arabic syntax based on the syntactic heritage with the contemporary linguistic studies. The study consisted of eight chapters preceded by an introduction and followed by a conclusion.

The thesis is founded on the basis proposed by Loserkel in forming the ‘Residual Theory’. Despite the various interpretations of that theory, it was investigated in the light of the ideologies it inspired .The study revealed  that while  Loserkel adopted a Marxist philosophy , the ‘Residual theory’ in Arabic is governed by the Arab Islamic culture and the pillars of Islamic dogma.

The study tackled the residual in the syntactic heritage investigating the concept of lingua franca and   its relationship with the dialects as well as Arabic language as far as both rules and residual are concerned from a synchronistic perspective.

The study dealt with the philosophy of the syntacticians in classifying the residual in the Arabic syntactic theory where they put rules for regulating linguistic performance.

The residual was manifested in the syntactic frame in the Arabic dialects, the Quranic recitations, the irregularities and poetic necessities.

The thesis investigated the syntactic debatable issues inIbn Al-Anbari’s book “Al-Inssaf fi Masail Al-Khilaf in the light of the Residual Theory in Arabic syntax.
