Abstract : Disasters, extreme weather conditions, and rural recreation make the availability of a portable heating and cooling device as a must. There are many devices that work on heating and power generation in the market. The air conditioner which works on the heat pump principle is well known. Harsh weather conditions, natural disasters, and recreation in rural areas (deserts and mountains) require the availability of a heating and cooling device that works on well-available fuel and has a low fuel consumption rate. Such a device will help in saving lives and encourage rural tourism. This paper proposes a heating and cooling device for rural places, harsh weather conditions, and natural disasters where no electricity is available. The device works on the heat pump (HP) principle to optimize its performance. The energy source selected for this device is fossil fuels; fossil fuel is used for convenience where no electricity is available. Low vibration, low noise Stirling Engine (SE) is used to drive the heat pump that produces heating/cooling effects. Analysis of the proposed device is performed for each of its components. The results attained from the analysis coincide with the results in the literature. An electricity-free, low vibration, silent and improved CHC device was attained. With suitable selected sub- devices an OHR of 2.429 was achieved by the proposed device compared to currently available devices

Fitness Function X-means for prolonging Wireless Sensor Networks Lifetime
Authors : Abdelrahman Radwan, Nasser Abdellatif , Eyad Radwan, Maryam Akhozahieh
Abstract : X-means and K-means are clustering algorithms proposed as a solution for prolonging Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) lifetime. In general, X-means overcomes K-means limitations such as predetermined number of clusters. The main concept of X-means is to create a network with basic clusters called parents and then generated (j) number of children clusters by parents splitting. X-means did not provide any criteria for splitting parents clusters, nor does it provide a method to determine the acceptable number of children. This article proposes FFX-means as an enhancement of X-means; FFX-means has a new method that determines if the parent clusters are worth splitting or not based on predefined network criteria, and later on it determines the number of children. Furthermore, FFX-means proposes a new cluster-heads selection method, where the cluster-head selected based on the remaining energy of the node and the intra-cluster distance. The simulation results show that FFX-means extend network lifetime by 11.5% over X-means and 75.34% over K-means. Furthermore, the results show that FFX-means balance the node's energy consumption, and nearly all nodes depleted their energy within an acceptable range of simulation rounds.

Method for the analytical evaluation of convolution integral
Authors : Maryam Akhozahieh, Osama Nashwan, and Nasser Abdellatif
Abstract : The convolution integral is a linear operation. Invoking the linearity property, the superposition principle is applied in this paper to obtain the convolution integral between two signals. The method depends on dividing the two signals into several segments; each has a fixed function and a finite or infinite width. Depending on the product of the segments' number of the first signal and that of the second signal, the evaluation of the convolution integral is divided into several sectors. Within each sector, one, two, or three integrals are needed to be calculated. The number of the integrals and the limits for each one depends on the width and the edge points of the two signals' segments involved in a particular sector. After calculating all integrals, the superposition principle is applied to find the convolution integral for a specific period. The unit step function can be applied to express the convolution integral as a single expression.

Effect of Coding and Diversity on the Performance of Wavelet Packets Multicarrier Multicode CDMA System
Authors : Maryam Mahmoud Akho-Zahieh, Nasser Abdellatif
Abstract : Coding and diversity are two techniques that can be used to improve communication system performance. The aim of this paper is to compare the effect of coding and diversity on the bit error rate performance of wavelet packets-multicarrier\multicode coded division multiple access systems. Two different code rates have been considered, namely, R = 1/2 and R = 1/3. In addition, three types of diversity have been discussed, which are selection diversity, equal gain combining, and maximum ratio combining. This study includes the effect of code rate, the number of substreams, the diversity order, the multipath intensity profile, the Nakagami parameter, and the number of uses. The study reveals that the code rate R=1/3 outperforms the code rate R=1/2. In addition, it has been noticed that the system with coding outperform the system with diversity when the channel interference is minimal, which includes less number of path, a small Nakagami parameter, and a small number of users. The system with a maximum ratio combining diversity in most conditions has the best performance.

Performance Analysis of MIMO wavelet Packet multicarrier multicode CDMA system with antenna selection
Authors : Nasser Abdellatif Maryam Mahmoud Akho-Zahieh
Abstract : Performance of Multicarrier Multicode Code-Division Multiple Access (MC/MCD-CDMA) systems can be improved significantly by using Wavelet Packets (WPs) as subcarriers instead of a sinusoidal function. This is because WPs have much lower sidelobes and negligible sidelobe energy leakage compared to sinusoidal carriers; this property significantly decreases the intercarrier interference and improves the system performance. Further improvement can be achieved by utilizing multiple antennas at transmitter and receiver to construct a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system. Channel hardening is the main drawback of MIMO systems. Antenna selection can be employed to reduce this problem. In this paper, we use the antenna selection in MIMO WP-MC/MCD-CDMA system. These combinations of antenna selection, MIMO, and WP in MC/MCD-CDMA improve the system performance significantly and reduce the channel hardening. The performance of the system is tested according to the outage probability and bit error rate. Two MIMO schemes on Nakagami-m fading channel are considered, which are: selective transmit /selective receive and selective transmit /maximum ratio combining receive. The study includes the effects of antennas' number, fading parameter-m, number of users, and the threshold signal to interferences plus noise ratio. The performance of the system is compared to that of MC/MCD-CDMA based on a sinusoidal carrier. The results reveal that: by increasing antennas' number, the system performance is improved significantly, and MC/MCD-CDMA system based on WPs carriers outperforms MC/MCD-CDMA system based on a sinusoidal carrier.

Utilization of Natural Resources in Jordan for Energy Storage
Authors : Adnan I. O. Zaid, Naser Abdellatif
Abstract : Jordan is a developing and non-producing oil country. The majority of its energy needs are imported from the neighboring Arab countries, where only 4% of its needs are produced locally, and 96% are imported. However, Jordan is very rich in renewable energy resources. The main objective of this work is to discuss the challenges facing the Jordanian energy sector and evaluate the renewable energy resources of the country. The main renewable energy resources in Jordan are solar, wind, geothermal and biomass. Using these energy resources may significantly decrease the energy reliance on oil that is imported from the Arab oil neighboring countries and improve the Jordanian population's access to energy and hence enhance the economic situation and hence improve the standard of living of the people in the country. It is expected that wind and solar energy resources have the potential to account for a certain percentage of electricity demand; the utilization of the geothermal energy for heating and cooling can reduce the cost of conventional energy used for these applications, especially since Jordan is very rich in this item. The geothermal wells are distributed all over the country. Regarding biomass resources, the conversion of agricultural waste into biodiesel can also reduce diesel imports. Similarly, the conversion of animal waste into biogas has the potential to replace a certain % of the imported LPG. Finally, a reliable, economic insulated storage tank that utilizes sand as a storage medium that can be easily maintained is suggested and discussed.

Narrowband Interference Suppression in Wavelet Packet Multirate Multicarrier Multicode CDMA System
Authors : Maryam Akhozahieh, Nasser Abdellatif
Abstract : Multicode (MCD) scheme can be used to transmit information with Multirate (MR) in the Multicarrier Code Division Multiple Access (MC-CDMA) system. Since wavelet packets (WPs) have lower sidelobes compared with sinusoidal carriers, then systems which use WPs as subcarriers are very effective in reducing the problem of intercarrier interference. The CDMA can suppress a given amount of interference. To mitigate the effect of narrowband jammer interference, a suppression filter (SF) can be used in the receiver. Also, to reduce multiple access interference, diversity techniques can be used. In this paper, the bit error rate performance of a system denoted by WPMRCDMA is tested. The effects of SF type and number of taps were investigated. Also, the effect of service rates is presented.

Abstract : Multirate (MR) communication systems, such as multicode (MCD) scheme and variable spreading length (VSL) schemes, have been considered for transmitting information with different data rates in Multicarrier code-division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems. In this paper, a novel system that uses the MCD scheme for MR services in WP-MC/MCD-CDMA system is presented. The Outage Probability (P) performance for the system was investigated by means of analytical methods and numerical results in a slow fading frequency selective Nakagami channel. The performance analysis includes the effect of fading parameter, different service rates, number of users in each service rate, WPs families and their filter length, and also a number of superstreams. The performance of the system was compared with that of MC/MCD-CDMA based on sinusoidal carrier. The results reveal that P performance is directly proportional to the service rate, fading parameter, and WPs filter length. It is inversely proportional to the number of users and fluctuates with the number of superstreams. Our proposed system outperforms the other systems. It is shown that considerable performance improvement can be obtained by using WPs as subcarriers.

A hybrid approach for provisioning sub-wavelength requests in IP-over-WDM networks
Authors : A Hadjiantonis, A Khalil, G Ellinas, MA Ali, Nasser Abdellatif, J Moghaddasi
Abstract : This paper deals with the provisioning of sub-wavelength requests in IP-over-WDM networks. Traditionally, these requests are either provisioned by setting up a lightpath switched transparently all the way from the source to the destination (routing and wavelength assignment - RWA - provisioning), or by using one or more existing lightpaths with enough residual bandwidth to time-multiplex the new traffic. In this work, an interconnection model between the IP and optical layers that allows all control information to be maintained under a single administrative domain (namely, the optical domain) is assumed. This enables hybrid provisioning, which makes use of existing lightpaths and lightpaths to be set up. Three hybrid algorithms are introduced, namely the shortest path first-fit (SPFF), the shortest-path exhaustive search (SPES) and network-wide exhaustive search (NetWES), each differing in the way in which the hybrid paths are sought. Simulation results indicate that all three perform better than the conventional overlay sequential routing, and NetWES performs better than the rest.

Specifically, rather than formulating an optimization problem, this work focuses on building a dynamic logical topology where light paths are set up and torn down in response to dynamic traffic demands. We explore the potential of optimizing the logical topology by means of interchanging the search space between logical and physical layers. We present several search schemes and compare their performances.

Abstract : The coastal dynamics model, restoring the three-dimensional hydro-physical structure of the coastal shallow-water area is essentially improved. The improvement involves two-equation of non-localarametrization scheme which is based on turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation rate nonlinear equations, the forcing influence of the surface wind on the drift geostrophic currents and their contribution to the formation of the turbulent exchange in the oceanic shallow-water zone, the interaction between atmospheric boundary layer and oceanic surface. We divide atmospheric turbulent momentum flux into two parts, responsible for development of the drift currents and formation of the wind waves. The kinetic turbulent energy flux from the atmosphere to oceanic eddies defined by the collapse of the surface waves. The depth of intensive dissipation oceanic surface layer and atmospheric friction velocity are used for the calculation of the dissipation in this layer. This model describes more fully mechanisms of turbulent coastal dynamics in the oceanic boundary layer than any one developed so far and can be used for solving many applied problems of coastal oceanic dynamics.

Abstract : A system with exponentially distributed resistances is examined here. The importance of field and current distribution inside each resistance is shown to be a necessary sign of the so-called continual problem. Consideration of this current distribution leads to a further increase of the relative spectral density of 1/f noise and the appearance of another critical exponent in comparison with a discrete problem. The critical exponent connected with the inhomogeneity of current distribution inside each resistance has been evaluated.

Cell design for a broadband CDMA personal communications network
Authors : LB Milstein, DL Schilling, RL Pickholtz, V Erceg, M Kullback, N Abdelatif, TD Smith, WH Metcalfe
Abstract : The results of field tests consisting of propagation measurements using broadband code division multiple access (B-CDMA) waveforms are described. B-CDMA operates in the 1850-1990 MHz frequency band. The spreading code rate is 24 Mchips/s, which occupies a bandwidth of 48 MHz. With this wide bandwidth, fading due to multipath propagation is minimized, since the bandwidth is much wider than the coherence bandwidth of the fade. Link loss measurements were taken between a B-CDMA transmitter and a mobile user, located at various indoor and outdoor points throughout the region of interest. Using these data, loci of constant link loss were plotted on a regional map. An analysis was performed which relates the number of personal communications network users, the power transmitted, and the link loss. Using the graph obtained from this analysis and the loci constant link loss obtained from the experiments, appropriate cell size and system design information are obtained

Results also showed that the code outperforms many known codes and is comparable in performance to the block projection code, which is harder to implement and more time consuming in the sense that the decoder would have to wait for the entire block to be received before it can start decoding.
