The Applied Science Private University is located in Shafa Badran District within the borders of Greater Amman Mayoralty on an area of 356.000 sqm. The university is affiliated with the Arab International Company for Education and Investment.
Study in the university started on 19.10.1991 after obtaining permit on 10.7.1989. The number of students enrolled at that time was 396, and the faculties were three: Arts, Science, and Economics, which comprised 14 majors.
At the present time, the university comprises nine faculties: Arts and Humanities, Law, Economics and Administrative Science, Engineering, Pharmacy, Para medicine, Information Technology, Nursing, and Art and Design and Allied Medical Sciences. The number of majors taught by these faculties is 28 for conferring the Bachelor degree, and a Master's Programs in Accounting and Marketing. The university has a deanship for student affairs and deanship for scientific research and higher studies.
The University has now 8000 male and female students who belong to 45 Arab, Islamic, and foreign counties. The number of the teaching staff members was, in the academic year 2011-2012, 285, 208 of which are Ph.D. holders. The university has sent 70 scholars to study for the Ph.D. degree in Arab, Asian, European and American universities.
The area of university buildings is 120,000 sqm. distributed over eight faculties and a building for the university presidency and student registration, a building for the main library which acquires around 120,000 scientific and literary books, a great number of which are in English and of recent editions. There is also a building for the deanship of student affairs (the activities building), a building for zoology, warehouses for dangerous materials, a building for restaurants, an auditorium, an olympic stadium for football, a gymnasium which accommodates 7,000 spectators, and a plenty of kiosks. There are open-air playgrounds for tennis, football, volleyball, and basketball, in addition to bowling, self-defense, physical fitness, steam baths and a sauna in the activities building. Furthermore, the university has built 160 laboratories, workshops, and studios and an herb museum in the Faculty of Pharmacy.
The university study system adopts the credit hour system (the US system). The academic year consists of two obligatory semesters and an optional summer semester. Teaching couples theory with application in all majors. The university allocates mandatory credit hours for application training which the student must take in order for him to graduate.
The university collaborates with many governmental and private institutions for training its students, and offers medical service to its students via the university clinic, Ibnu Al-Haitham Hospital as well as other accredited hospitals, physicians, and pharmacies. There is also a section for resident students. The section is affiliated with the Office of Public Relations and Information and offers the following services:
1. to work for issuing visas for students who intend to study in the university, send these visas to students'
addresses, and send their names to borders checkpoints.
2. to work for issuing visas and work permits to non-Jordanian teaching staff members.
3. to work for issuing residence permits to non-Jordanian students.
4. to process the military service books of Jordanian students.
5. to answer inquiries of students and their patrons living abroad.
Other university facilities include the mosque, a branch of the Arab Bank, a post office and bookshops.
The university has a network of transportation with the districts of Amman and with the main cities. It has a fleet of around 70 buses which serve students against nominal fares for each semester.
The university is a member of the Federation of Arab Universities, the Federation of Islamic Universities, the International Federation of Universities, the League of Arab-European Institutions, the Arab Organization of Registrars. The university maintains cultural relations, twin agreements and collaboration with many Arab and foreign universities, which makes it easy for students to continue their higher studies. The university is the first in the area which has won the certificate of quality assurance (ISO 9001:2000).
